Campaign Description:On November 9th, the New Mexico State Investment Council (SIC) decided to independently divest from the "Highest Offending Companies," as identified by the Sudan Divestment Task Force.

The SIC estimated that they have $45 million dollars in companies including: PetroChina, Sinopec, Lundin Petroleum, Weatherford Ltd., Wartsila, Alstom and Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding.

The New Mexico Education Retirement Board, controlling $9.4 billion in assets, also chose to divest based on the Sudan Divestment Task Force model in January 2008. Of the 22 companies targeted for divestment, holdings in China Chemical and Petroleum Corporation (Sinopec) will be liquidated while future investments in the remaining companies will be prohibited.

There is still a campaign to divest New Mexico as the Public Employee Retirement Association of New Mexico is yet to adopt the same policy. The SIC is the larger of the two funds with over $16 billion dollars in total assets. PERA oversees over $13 billion dollars in management.

Governor Bill Richardson has called on the New Mexico Public Employee Retirement Association to join the New Mexico SIC and the New Mexico ERB in divesting.
